Once, a group of scholars knowledgeable of Sastras and followers of Yogic practice went to Yaajnavalkya Maharshi and requested to instruct them Yoga. Then he taught them Yoga by addressing to his wife Gargi as the principal disciple. This instruction, known by the name (Yoga)Yaajnavalkya Geeta, is the discussion between Gargi and Yaajnavalkya and is organized into 12 chapters.
The great philosopher, great musicologist, a Jnani of all doctrines, a thinker, lover of peace who guided philosophers as well as pragmatists, an advocate and orator of Vedas, a composer of Smruti, Sri Yajnavalkya Maharshi incarnated only for the greatest of Vidyas, Brahmavidya. He underwent discipleship at Suryadeva and attained expertise in Brahmavidya.
He instructed Para Tatva to Janaka through his authoritative subject of "Nirbeeja Yoga". Since then he was called a Yogeeshwara, an authority in Yoga. His teachings of Atma Tatva, Griha Nirvahana (household management) and Yogic science to his wives Maitreyi, Katyayani and Gargi also became popular and are great scriptures to study.
